This one may seem rather boring this week, but it's quite interesting in context.
Columbus and his Old World contemporaries knew a good deal about the past, the past that was peculiarly thers, for it had been recorded in writing. It was informed by a continuity that could be traced back to the story of Creation in the Old Testament. Most Americans have inherited that same understanding of the past...
(Which begs the question: why are we trying so hard to rewrite history and the truths about Creation?!)

I think the main point in this passage is "the past that was peculiarly thers" This says to me that it is a past biased by their own beliefs, not one that tells the whole truth. But I agree with Vicki, very interesting, not boring at all.
