First up is a cutie by Dave Keane on a typical kids' problem: being clean!

"Sloppy" Joe has a problem; his family just doesn't understand why he can't be neater. He leaves stuff everywhere, he keeps pet frogs, and his hair and clothes are always a mess.

But why does it bother his family so much? Joe wonders. After all, he's a pretty good kid...isn't he?

Sloppy Joe is fun, with colorful, detailed pictures that will have your 5-7 year olds laughing. It provides a good conversation-starter with your kids about why we should try to think of how our behavior affects other people, and also about what really matters on the inside.

Gene Zion's books about Harry the Dog fascinated me when I was a kid, and still remain a popular favorite with the little guys. Harry's antics and quizzical look at life is hilarious and heart-warming, especially when Harry is around his family. I especially loved Harry by the Sea, when Harry and his family go out to the beach for a vacation day. Instead of just a romp through the sand and waves, though, Harry winds up getting tangled up in a giant clump of seaweed...and convinces everyone on the beach that he's a sea monster!

This series of books is sure to please kid and parent alike. I personally reread them oodles of times growing up, and would love a set of these for my kids down the road (when I actually get some!).
