Today's teaser's from one of my new favorites, "Battle Royal" by Ralph Ellison. (Seriously, if you haven't read it, you need to.)
As background: the main character, a young black man, is currently fighting in a boxing ring with several other young men, all striking out desperately from under their blindfolds. But there's only one this on this young man's mind: delivering his high school graduation speech for the white men who put him in the ring in the first place.
I fought back with hopeless desperation. I wanted to deliver my speech more than anything else in the world, because I felt that only these men could judge truly my ability, and now this stupid clown was ruining my chances. ~~ "Battle Royal", pg. 7
